Tom Hanks delighted fans with a surprise cameo in a music video from country music duo Something Out West, which includes the actor’s son Chet Hanks, and the video is a play on the Oscar winner’s iconic role as Forrest Gump.
“You Better Run” is the latest release from Something Out West, consisting of Chet Hanks and musician Drew Arthur. The song’s music video was released on March 27 on YouTube and serves as one big nod to the 1994 film directed by Robert Zemeckis in which Tom Hanks played the movie’s titular character.
The music video sees Chet Hanks re-create the film’s most memorable moments made famous by his father.
In addition to the film’s beloved opening scene, Chet Hanks is seen in Gump’s famous outfits, offering chocolates to strangers, interacting with Jenny, the character’s childhood love played by Robin Wright in the original film, and embarking on a cross-country run. While singing, he sits on a bench and interacts with characters similar to the ones in the ’90s classic.
Still, it’s not until the end that fans are treated to Tom Hanks’ cameo appearance when he joins his son on the bench. Tom Hanks appears to be mildly confused and amused as his son belts out the lyrics to “You Better Run.”
Something Out West announced the music video’s debut in a post on Instagram which has since received plenty of support from fans, including perhaps Tom Hanks and Chet Hanks’ biggest fan of all: Rita Wilson.
Wilson, who has been married to Tom Hanks since 1988 and his mother to Chet Hanks, commented on the post with a string of fire emojis.
“Run Forrest run!!! ICONIC being that Tom Hanks is your dad,” another user replied to the post.
Meanwhile, amid a flood of runner emojis, another user wrote “Ayyy we got a cameo from the (GOAT) in there!! Love it!!”
Something Out West released their debut track, “Leaving Hollywood” earlier this year, according to Variety.
