Cheetah at Columbus zoo dies after pneumonia diagnosis

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The cheetah named Kvamme, known for wearing his special medical shirt, has died after being diagnosed with pneumonia, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced on social media.

The cheetah was born in 2014 and came to the zoo from Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. The mother could not provide him or his sister, named Kesi, milk after getting sick.

“Kvamme’s unique personality and complex medical history made him a favorite of our Conservation Medicine team and his Animal Care team,” the post reads. “He was known by guests for his signature medical shirt, which he wore with pride to protect his skin from abrasions. Through training, he even assisted keepers in putting it on by lifting one foot at a time! The signature medical shirt intrigued visitors, inspiring them to learn more about cheetahs.”

Through his medical complications, the zoo said the cheetah maintained a bright spirit. They said the animal care team will remember his “teddy bear ears, loud purrs, and happy meows.”

“Join us in celebrating Kvamme’s life and the incredible impact he had on all who met him,” the post reads. “After 10 special years, he has left an indelible mark on all of us.”
