Humphrey Ker names the clubs explored before Wrexham takeover, Rob McElhenney had other ideas

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are hoping to celebrate another promotion at the end of the season with Wrexham sitting second in the League One table.

Wrexham continue to make real progress both on and off the pitch.

On the pitch, Wrexham beat Stockport County 1-0 last weekend to move ahead of Wycombe Wanderers and into second place.

A third straight promotion could be just weeks away with Wrexham gunning for a position in the Championship.

Off the pitch, Wrexham’s incredible financial records show enormous turnover and sponsorship revenue from the 2023-24 season.

Humphrey Ker shares the clubs he suggested to Rob McElhenney

McElhenney and Reynolds bought Wrexham for £2million in 2021 and the club have been on an upward trajectory ever since.

Other clubs were on the radar, though, and we recently covered how McElhenney and Reynolds could have bought Hartlepool United instead.

Humphrey Ker has now spoken to Ben Foster on the FozCast and discussed the other clubs he suggested to McElhenney at the time.

Ker admitted that Aldershot Town and Carlisle United were in the mix at the beginning, joking that Aldershot were a ‘rogue shout’.

McElhenney was confused at first and had other ideas; he wanted to explore buying a club in Ireland or Scotland rather than targeting English football.

Ker highlighted that the ceiling with those clubs was limited in comparison to Wrexham – and the rest is history.

“We looked at Aldershot because they alphabetically the first team in the National League,” said Ker. “I told him about the National League, and he was like ‘what is this Aldershot?’, and so I was like ‘we’ll look into Aldershot’.

“We looked at Hartlepool, I think lots of people know that, Carlisle United.

“I don’t think I’ve ever brought this up before, initially, he wanted to do it in Ireland or Scotland, because he’s from Ireland, so he was like ‘what about Shamrock Rovers?’

“I was like, look… the League of Ireland has great clubs, historic clubs, it would be brilliant in many ways, but it would be like throwing a brick into a pond – if you put your time and energy and resources into a League of Ireland club, you win the League of Ireland instantaneously, no-one can come close to you and there’s no drama there.

“Scotland is interesting, you could start with like an Arbroath or Queen of the South, down near the bottom and then build them up, but you will always have this thing where you probably get them into the Premiership, but you’re going to run into Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen and then, obviously, Celtic and Rangers, we’ll get hammered every time we play them, we might beat other people, it’s going to be a bit strange.

“The thing with the longest room for growth, I think, is English football. No offence Aldershot, but Aldershot is a bit of a rogue shout,” he added.

Where Aldershot Town currently sit

These are real sliding doors moments.

McElhenney and Reynolds could have easily bought another club and Wrexham may well have continued to be stuck in the National League.

That is exactly where Aldershot Town are right now, sitting 13th in the table with outside hopes if a play-off place.

Aldershot have now spent 12 consecutive seasons in the National League and find themselves in an almost identical position to Wrexham before the takeover.

Their moment in the sun may well come down the line, but McElhenney and Reynolds no doubt feel that they made the right decision by choosing Wrexham in the end.
