A new chapter is coming for the University Interscholastic League.
On Monday, UIL announced that Dr. Jamey Harrison will become the league’s next executive director. He’ll officially step into the role on April 1, taking over for Dr. Charles Breithaupt, who is set to retire on August 31 after nearly 20 years in the position.
For Harrison, it’s a full-circle moment and a chance to lead an organization he’s been a big part of for more than a decade.
“I am deeply honored to step into this role and continue serving Texas students and schools through the UIL,” Harrison said in a statement. “The opportunities UIL provides go beyond competition, they shape character, unite communities and create lifelong memories.”
A Familiar Name in UIL Circles
Harrison has been with UIL since 2011 as deputy executive director. In that role, he’s overseen all departments, worked closely with state lawmakers, and led rulemaking and adjudication processes.
He now becomes just the eighth executive director in UIL’s long history. The organization oversees academic, athletic, and music competitions for schools across Texas.
Leading Changes Behind the Scenes
Over the years, Harrison has helped roll out some major changes within UIL.
He was involved in the launch of the six-conference system, which adjusted how schools are grouped by size. He also helped implement Division I and II playoff brackets in all team sports, which created more opportunities for schools across the state.
Harrison also worked on updating UIL’s realignment process, using mapping technology to help sort out which schools compete where.
He played a key role in UIL’s emergency responses during major weather events and during the COVID-19 pandemic, helping schools navigate complicated situations.
From the Classroom to the Top Job
Before joining UIL, Harrison spent years working in public education. He was a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, deputy superintendent, and later the superintendent of Bridge City ISD.
His time in those roles gave him experience in just about every part of the school system.
Outside of Texas, Harrison has served on multiple National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS)committees and remains active in educational circles.
Looking Ahead
Harrison is a graduate of Hardin-Jefferson High School. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Lamar University, and later received his doctorate from The University of Texas at Austin.
Now, as he prepares to take over the UIL’s top job, Harrison will be tasked with managing its future direction while working with schools, coaches, and communities statewide.
As Dr. Breithaupt’s retirement nears, the transition marks a new moment for UIL and the millions of students who participate in its programs every year.
