Severance
Severance season 2 is about to air its finale, and hopefully once that happens, we will not have to wait as long for season 3 to get here.
If it gets here.
There are some odd conflicting news items about season 3 of the show to point where I’ve talked about it in the past as happening, but Apple PR emailed me specifically to remind me that no, Severance season 3 has not been officially announced and greenlit.
While I noted that, I also replied that Ben Stiller has been talking openly about season 3 spooling up, saying there’s a writers room in LA working on it and promising there won’t be a three year gap this time. There is an additional, unconfirmed report about new showrunners that just went out for season 3, but the sourcing on that seems nebulous at this point, and I wouldn’t consider that a firm news item. Stiller quotes, on the other hand, I’m taking as gospel.
It is not uncommon to wait for a show to air before announcing that another season is coming. Though at a reported $20 million and episode, and Apple previously saying they were going to spend less on original content, maybe that’s giving them pause. And we have seen Apple greenlight new seasons of shows before the current one ends, like with Slow Horses, where that has happened multiple times.
Severance
I’m not worried. At all. Severance is easily the most popular show on Apple TV and a major driver of media conversation in a way we haven’t seen with weekly airings of shows in a very long time. as fans try to unravel its various mysteries. This season, Severance became the most-watched series in Apple history, before it even finished season 2, passing up all three seasons of Ted Lasso (now, a fourth is coming). And at the time, Apple had this to say:
“We have long admired Ben’s extraordinary gift for original and immersive storytelling, and with he and Dan at the helm, Severance has proven to be an extraordinary success and a cultural phenomenon,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming, Apple TV+. “The series has become an obsession for audiences all over the world and we can’t wait for people to continue to experience all the masterful twists and turns as the rest of the season unfolds.”
So, I’m going to say there’s a 100% chance that Severance season 3 will happen, even if Apple, for whatever reason, doesn’t feel like confirming that just yet. Once the finale airs, I expect we’ll hear about a renewal in short order.
