Where is my NJ refund? When to expect your tax money back

If you’ve already filed your New Jersey state tax return, you’re likely wondering when your refund will arrive.

Here’s what you need to know about checking your status, processing times, and potential delays.

Where is my New Jersey tax refund?

New Jersey’s Division of Taxation will start issuing refunds this weekend. If you filed electronically, you may see your refund sooner than those who filed a paper return.

You can track your refund using the state’s online refund portal. You’ll need to input your Social Security number and the exact amount expected in refund, so make sure to have a copy of your prepared taxes nearby.

The portal allows you to check on your 2024 and 2023 refunds.

When you get your refund depends on when and how you filed. E-filers can expect their money after four weeks; paper filers will wait 12 weeks to see their refund.

If there’s problems with your tax filings and you need to make corrections, it will slow down your refund.

The bottom line: after Saturday, the state will start issuing refunds for returns that have already been filed and processed. If you haven’t filed yet or you just recently submitted your returns electronically, you’re looking at a four-week wait for your money. If you filed a paper return, you’ll be waiting until mid-spring for your refund.
