MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Incumbent state superintendent Jill Underly and GOP-supported challenger Brittany Kinser are moving on to the spring election, the Associated Press projects Tuesday.
Sauk Prairie School District Jeff Wright will not advance.
Underly said she was in great spirits Tuesday night, but that there is still work to be done ahead of the April Election. She said Wisconsinites truly care about their public schools and she wants to continue to educate the public.
Underly said one of her main goals is to focus on the education budget.
“I think that, again, it’s very clear that in the election results tonight, that Wisconsinites value their public schools,” Underly said. “And, again, I’m singing their song, and telling their stories and educating people about the dangers of what could happen if we no longer have our public schools.”
In a statement, Kinser said she was excited and thankful for the Wisconsinites who voted to support her.
“I am inspired and humbled by the level of support my campaign has received in just a few short months,” Kinser said. “From now until April 1, I will continue to travel the state and share my plan to bring a clean slate, a fresh start, and a fundamentally new approach to DPI.”
Dr. Underly has been serving the Department of Public Instruction since 2021. She has worked in education for over 25 years, teaching all levels. Under her leadership Wisconsin has been ranked number six in the nation for education.
Kinser is an education consultant from Wauwatosa. She previously led charter schools in the Milwaukee area and worked at schools in Chicago and California. She is the only candidate who supports school choice programs.
The general election is on April 1.
