MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Severe weather in Clark County Wednesday night left fallen trees and powerlines on Highway 84.
“The wind was blowing real hard,” said Rachel Pugh. “Like straight-line winds. It was pretty rough.”
Rachel Pugh lives nearby and was in the area when the storm came through. She described the terrifying moments while she and her father waited in her vehicle deciding what to do.
“The wind started blowing real hard, the rain was hard and I was like let’s just wait just a minute cause he has trouble walking and we was sitting in there and I started hearing like sleet…the hail hitting the truck and I said oh no we gotta get out of the car,” she said. “We gotta get out of the car and get in the house.”
EMA Director Roy Waite said so far there have been 5 reports of homes that were damaged.
One of those homes was destroyed when it collapsed during the storm.
Pugh said she passed the home earlier and couldn’t believe the sight.
“The top collapsed down on it,” said Pugh. “Its a green house up towards County Road 3.”
Waite told Fox10 News a woman who lived in the home made it out, but she did suffer a few minor injuries.
The storm also closed a 20-mile stretch of Highway 84.
The roads have been cleared and reopened, but utility crews are still working to get the power back up and running in some areas.
