Rep Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill) Wednesday said she thinks fewer women are involved in manufacturing because the word ‘manufacturing’ itself is a sexist word as it has ‘man’ in it. The comment came as the Democrat lawmaker was speaking during a commerce, manufacturing and trade subcommittee hearing.
Schakowsky said she met some people from a manufacturing company who were engaged in getting more young people in the manufacturing sector. “So, I asked them, so, how many of those students that are signing up and want to do this? How many are women?” Schakowsky said, adding that they told her it was at least 13%.
“It was a low number,” she said. “And you had mentioned trying to engage more women in manufacturing. I’m just wondering if just the name manufacturing sounds like a guy.”
The statement went viral with social media users commenting on the absurdity of what she said. Donald Trump Jr said he was at a loss for words to describe the stupidity. “I have no words to describe the level of stupidity of today’s Democrats,” he said.
X users explained that ‘manufacturing’ has nothing to do with man as the word has its roots in both Latin and French. “The word “manufacture” isn’t sexist. It has nothing to do with “man”. It comes from the Latin words “manus” (hand) and “facere” (to make), and simply means “made by hand”. The term has came to encompass the production of goods by machine or other means—not just by hand,” one explained.
“It’s like Democrats are actively trying to never win another election ever again,” one added. Another user commented that by this logic ‘woman’ is also a sexist term as it has ‘man’ in it.
“I swear it’s as if they’re intentionally sabotaging their own party,” one wrote.
“How can she manage? Manual laborers, Managers, Manicurists. All obviously hopelessly sexist terms,” another wrote.
