Super Bowl 2025: Philadelphia Eagles beat Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 after Kendrick Lamar half-time show

The Philadelphia Eagles have won their second Super Bowl with a 40-22 thumping of the Kansas City Chiefs, making Jordan Mailata the first Australian to play for a winning team on the NFL’s night of nights.

Mailata, who protects superstar quarterback Jalen Hurts as part of the Eagles’ elite offensive line, is the second Australian to win a Super Bowl ring.

Jesse Williams was a member of the Seattle Seahawks when they won in 2014, but he did not play in the 43-8 demolition of Denver in Super Bowl XLVIII.

The Chiefs were trying to become the first team to win three straight Super Bowls but were never in the contest at the Superdome in New Orleans.

Superstar Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw two first-half interceptions, the first of which was returned for a touchdown by Cooper DeJean.

The second came just 14 yards away from the Chiefs’ endzone and Hurts immediately hit receiver AJ Brown for another score, meaning the Eagles could enjoy Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s electric half-time show with a healthy 24-0 lead.

Kansas City’s star tight end, Travis Kelce, did not catch a pass until late in the third quarter, by which point the the Eagles had already added a field goal to lead 27-0, meaning the Chiefs would have to pull off the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history.

Instead, Mahomes and the Chiefs continued to struggle in the face of a rampant Philly defence.

Hurts connected with DeVonta Smith for another Philadelphia touchdown before Mahomes finally found Xavier Worthy for Kansas City’s first points of the game two minutes before three-quarter-time.

Already leading 34-6, the Eagles put the cue in the rack in the fourth quarter, conservatively working into position for two more Jake Elliott field goals before a pair of consolation touchdowns from the Chiefs made the scoreline look more flattering than they perhaps deserved.

Some of your thoughts in the comments

A well-deserved Super Bowl win for the Eagles who were too good against the Chiefs and have possibly the best defensive line in the NFL, as well as one of the best running backs in Saquon Barkley.

Will this Superbowl loss put a dampener on the Mahomes legacy? Just shows that a good defense wins you games.

The Chiefs are trying to make the scoreboard more flattering, and they are doing a good job.

That might be the best play of this game — it’s a pitty it means nothing now.
