CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – Lake effect snow showers that have settled east of Cleveland today will slowly come to a close this afternoon.
Sunshine has been building in from west to east which will lend to a quieter afternoon and evening.
Clear skies initially will take temperatures from the upper teens and low 20s today to the low to mid teens tonight. Clouds will start to build after midnight ahead of an incoming clipper system Thursday.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for several counties across Northeast Ohio beginning at 4 AM Thursday and lasting until 4 AM Friday.
This will bring widespread system snow to Northeast Ohio Thursday morning. Watch for slick travel conditions due to the cold temperatures and accumulating snow. All in all, Thursday will not be a convenient travel day which is why we have issued a 19 First Alert Weather Day for tomorrow. As the system snow departs, lake effect will take over late tomorrow afternoon into the evening which will keep slick travel likely across our primary and secondary snowbelt regions. Snow totals look to range from 1″ to 4″+ with higher totals possible under any lake enhanced snow squalls.
Temperatures are on a slow warming trend to the mid 30s Friday and Saturday. This warmth brings with it another opportunity for a system snow setup Saturday.
This is a two part storm system. The northern low will stay north of our area into Ontario while the second low will travel through the Tennessee Valley. This leaves us in an interesting window where we could see a wintry mix before a change over to all snow. Due to this window of possible rain first, it is still a little too early to dive into specifics on snow totals with this system at this time. We have designated Saturday as another 19 First Alert Weather Day as a result of the travel impacts that will be likely Saturday into Saturday night.
Lingering lake effect snow will stick around Sunday as temperatures come crashing down headed into next week. Dangerously cold temperatures and wind chill values set up just in time for MLK Day and Tuesday. This looks to be the coldest air Northeast Ohio has seen in quite some time. Given these persistent signals of extreme cold, we have issued 19 First Alert Weather Days for Monday and Tuesday. All necessary precautions to keep pets and people safe during this arctic stretch should be taken. Wind chill values could be below -15° these days.
