Preview: Women’s basketball aims to bounce back against Cal State Fullerton

Cal Poly Women’s Basketball takes on Cal State Fullerton for Black History Night at Mott Athletic Center tonight at 6 p.m., one of two home games this week.

The Mustangs (10-12, 5-7 Big West) most recently fell short of a win to No. 1 Hawai’i last Thursday. Cal Poly looking to get back on track tonight against the No. 9 Titans (5-18, 3-10 Big West) who are ranked just one spot below the Mustangs.

The Mustang bench provided a significant boost in the team’s recent 67-43 loss to the Rainbow Wahine, scoring 28 points, more than half of Cal Poly’s total. The Mustangs have been competitive in games where the bench and starters have balanced the scoring load throughout the season.

The Mustangs are favored entering tonight’s matchup, having won their last three games against Cal State Fullerton.

A strong defensive front

While struggling this season, Cal State Fullerton will look to challenge Cal Poly’s defense with their perimeter shooting and fast-paced offense. However, the Titan offense will match up with the Mustangs’ defensive discipline and ability to force turnovers.

The Mustang’s defense has been strong all season long, which has propelled them to key wins and kept them competitive in the Big West.

The Mustangs, anchored by their stellar defense, currently rank second in the country in defending from beyond the three, holding opponents to just 24.4% shooting from beyond the arc. The Mustangs have kept opponents under 60 points in nine of their 10 wins this year and rank third in the Big West in forced turnovers, with opponents averaging 17.9 per game.

With two upcoming games against lower-ranked Big West teams in Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge, the Mustangs have an opportunity to build momentum and solidify their position in the conference standings.

Tip-off is at for 6 p.m. in Mott Athletics Center, and guests are encouraged to wear black for Black History Night.
