Acclaimed Boxing Biopic ‘The Fire Inside’ Debuts On Digital Streaming This Week


The Fire Inside—an acclaimed boxing biopic about Olympic champ Claressa Shields starring Brian Tyree Henry and Ryan Destiny—is new this week on digital streaming.

Rated PG-13, The Fire Inside opened in theaters nationwide on Dec. 25, 2024. The official summary for the film reads, “The Fire Inside is the inspirational true story of Claressa Shields, arguably the greatest female boxer of all time.

“Claressa, a high school junior from Flint, Michigan, aided by her tough-love coach, Jason Crutchfield, pushes past all limitations to become the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing. But even at the pinnacle of success, Claressa has to reckon with the fact that not all dreams are created equal, and the real fight has only just begun.”

Destiny stars as Claressa in The Fire Inside while Henry plays Jason. Directed by Rachel Morrison, The Fire Inside is written by Moonlight Oscar-winning filmmaker and Mufasa: The Lion King director Barry Jenkins.

According to When to Stream, The Fire Inside debuts on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, Jan. 28. While the film will be available on a variety of digital platforms including AppleTV and Fandango, Prime Video is making the film available for purchase or rental on PVOD on Monday, Jan. 27, at 9 p.m. PT/Tuesday at 12 a.m. PT.

Per Prime Video, The Fire inside will be available for digital purchase for $19.99. Since digital rental prices are typically $5 less than purchase prices, viewers can expect to rent The Fire Inside for $14.99 for a 48-hour period.

How Did Critics And Audiences Receive ‘The Fire Inside’?

The Fire Inside has only been released in North American theaters to date. Per The Numbers, the film has earned $8 million. According to IMDb, The Fire Inside had a production budget of $12 million before prints and advertising costs.

Rotten Tomatoes critics collectively gave The Fire Inside a 93% “fresh” rating based on 103 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “Equal measures inspiring, and enraging, this typical sports drama knows how to take a hit and dole them out with enough emotion and vigor to stoke The Fire Inside.”

Meanwhile, audiences gave The Fire Inside a 95% “fresh” rating on RT’s Popcornmeter based on 500-plus verified user ratings. RT’s audience summary for the film reads, “Delivering a solid emotional punch with pugilistic skill, The Fire Inside shines much needed light on the inspirational true story of Olympic boxing champion Claressa Shields.”

In addition to critical and audience acclaim, The Fire Inside has caught the attention of awards season voters. Among its accolades, The Fire Inside earned nominations from the NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor for Bryan Tyree Henry, Outstanding Breakthrough Performance for Ryan Destiny and Outstanding Writing in a Motion Picture for Barry Jenkins.

In addition, the Film Independent Spirit Awards nominated Destiny for Best Lead Performance and Best Cinematography for Rina Yang.

The Fire Inside is still playing in theaters and arrives on PVOD on Tuesday.
