PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A sunny, but chilly Martin Luther King Day on this Monday. Overnight lows were freezing in some of the outlying areas of the Valley, with a low of 39 degrees at Sky Harbor Airport.
This is seven degrees below average, and these cold mornings will persist throughout the week as we declare a First Alert for freezing temperatures across most of the metro area Wednesday morning.
Overnight lows will be at or below freezing in many of the Valley cold spots, so protection of your pipes, plants and pets will be needed on Wednesday. A Freeze Watch has been issued but will likely be upgraded to a warning by Tuesday.
A freeze warning has been issued for tonight and tomorrow morning in western Arizona. This goes along with a Wind Advisory that is also in effect through late tonight. These windy and cooler temperatures are all due to a massive trough in the jetstream with a high-pressure ridge just to our west. This is causing high fire danger conditions once again in Southern California.
We should expect some breeziness across the Valley late today and tonight, possibly with blowing dust in the western part of Maricopa County. High wind gusts up to 50 mph could be possible tonight across Northern and Eastern Arizona.
These breezy and sometimes windy conditions should keep us well above freezing tonight and tomorrow morning. But after highs only in the low 60s, our First Alert for freezing temperatures will go into effect Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
With the colder air shifting east of the state Tuesday night, daytime highs should warm into the mid-60s Wednesday and back to the 70s Thursday-Saturday. Long-range models bring in a chance of rain into the valley by Sunday.
Confidence is still rather low at this point, but confidence is high when it comes to cooler temperatures across the state on Sunday and Monday next week.
